McKinney Chapel Preservation Fund
ITS HISTORY AND NEED....
McKinney Chapel is a treasured and historical structure that rests inside the gates of The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards, providing monthly non-denominational services to all. Throughout its 200 year history in Pickens County, it has served as an elementary school, a community center, a meeting place, and most importantly, a church. The current structure was abandoned from 1945 to 1982 due to its walls falling, building listing, windows broken, and doors rotting. The late Georgia Chapman and her husband Gene were committed to restoring the chapel out of love. In 1982, they mounted a campaign that rebuilt the structure with local hands and donations of lumber, supplies, and labor.
Today, we are again facing a significant need to maintain and repair our beloved chapel. Historically the offerings received during our monthly services have been primarily donated to local food banks and charities, with some used for general maintenance and minor repairs. The Chapel and its supporting structures have deteriorated, creating a critical and immediate need to ensure the preservation and safety of the buildings. The maintenance and repairs required are extensive: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, driveway repair, and painting. The current estimates place the financial requirements to meet these needs at over $40,000.
Easter and springtime bring a particular time of renewal, hope, and restoration. We ask you to reach into your hearts and help bring McKinney Chapel back to its original simplistic beauty and condition.
The McKinney Chapel Committee, a 501(c)(3), has established a separate fund dedicated to preserving this beloved building. This fund was started with generous donations in 2020 to celebrate the Chapel's 200th anniversary. Please make your tax-deductible check contributions payable to the following:
